16 Jan Choosing the Right Modular Wall System for Cleanrooms
In demanding environments like cleanrooms, the wall systems do more than simply define boundaries. The right wall system can determine cleanliness, help you reach compliance, and even allow you to make future adjustments to your space. In this article, we’ll break down the basic types of modular cleanroom wall systems, touch on some of their features, and help you decide the best choice for your operation.
Types of Modular Cleanroom Wall Systems
Modular cleanroom wall systems are designed to meet different needs and applications. Here’s a look at the main options.
Post-and-Panel Systems
One of the most common types are post-and-panel systems. These are just what they sound like, modular walls that have vertical posts into which rigid panels fit.
Post-and-panel systems are generally non-progressive, which means that individual panels can be removed or replaced at will, without affecting the rest of the walls. This makes them best for cleanrooms that may need to be reconfigured or adapted at another time.
Seamless Systems
Seamless cleanroom wall systems, on the other hand, are designed to create smoother surfaces, which in turn makes them easier to clean and maintain. They use studless panels, which means there are no visible vertical posts (like H-posts) between the panels. The panels used may be flush, which are separate panels that align to form smooth and even walls, or liner, which are panels placed over existing walls that act as a finish.
Seamless panels can be either progressive or non-progressive, but either way, the panels are joined tightly together so that no gaps are exposed, which of course reduces contamination risks. Additionally, seamless systems often include coving, both horizontally and vertically, to remove sharp corners where particles may collect.
Progressive vs. Non-Progressive Panels
Though we’ve mentioned these types of panels briefly, it’s worth going into detail, as it may significantly impact your choice of wall system.
Progressive Panels
Progressive panels are rigid panels that must be installed in sequence, as each panel depends on the next. In other words, they cannot be mixed and matched, as they need to align together in a specific order.
Using progressive panels helps contribute to a smooth and even surface because there is no need for visible posts/beams. This of course makes them better for environments with the strictest requirements.
On the other hand, they can also make modifications or future changes difficult. Removing each single panel often involves disassembling connected panels, and so forth, which can complicate things when trying to modify your space.
Non-Progressive Panels
By contrast, non-progressive panels can be installed independently. This means that each panel can be removed or replaced without affecting the others. As you might expect, this creates an extra layer of flexibility. If you are expecting future modifications/reconfigurations, then non-progressive panels are likely the best choice. While they may not always reach the same level of seamlessness as progressive panels, non-progressive panels do give your cleanroom more options.
Which Modular Wall System Is Right for Your Cleanroom?
Both post-and-panel and seamless modular systems can be excellent choices, depending on your specific needs. Rather than thinking of one option as inherently better than the other, it’s best to choose the system that aligns best with your specific application. There will be many factors at play, including:
- The cleanroom classification you need to meet and any other industry regulations that may apply.
- The size and layout of your facility.
- Whether you would like to reconfigure or expand your cleanroom at a later date.
To make the best decision possible, it’s always recommended to consult with the experts. They can help answer any questions you might have, and address the finer points of your specific project.
