It is really exciting to see the progress happening on the James Webb Telescope. We’ve been following all the incremental steps of this telescope, and recently a time lapse video was taken during the installation of the MIRI which is the Mid Infrared Instrument. The video below was taken over several hours and filmed in NASA legendary Goddard cleanroom.

As with most things sent into space and created by NASA, there was a high degree of precision that came with the installation of the MIRI component. Here is what Jason Hylan, lead of the mechanical systems on the JWST, had to say:

“The MIRI had to be positioned to a tolerance of 25 microns, or one one-thousandth of an inch, which is less than the width of a human hair.”
