NASA is continually innovating and developing new products to explore the galaxy. While sending people into space is potentially dangerous and expensive, sending robots into space is a viable alternative.
Robots have been used for several Mars missions, and the next generation of robots is currently being developed. One of the new concepts for these robots is a spherical shape assembled from several rods. Using these kinds of shapes serves multiple functions, including being used to absorb impact, as well as propelling the robot forward. Additionally, the rods can be packed up smaller for transport and expanded when they get to their destination.
Check out this great video from NASA explaining a little bit more about how this new type of robot will work.
