We’ve done several posts on the Webb telescope, and we are anxious to see the images of the universe it will reveal in a few years. The technology used to get the telescope into space is quite incredible, but once it is there it needs to be positioned and moved around. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is through the use of a rocket, but this comes with the downside of using fuel, and it can cloud the area near the telescope. There are some really unique methods of turning the telescope using magnetic fields as well as reaction wheels.
The science behind this process is somewhat complicated, but we found an amazing video from the “Smarter Every Day” that shows how this technology works by means of dropping a cat and visiting NASA.
