Weather forecasting is a complex job and in the event of a weather emergency has the potential to steer people way from incoming hurricanes and tornados.  To keep us a step ahead of the weather, satellites are used to give us detailed pictures from high above the earth.  These satellites have been used since the 1970’s, and the newest weather satellite will be quite the upgrade.


Named the GOES-R (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R series), this satellite will be incredibly advanced and give us new insight to solar flares, weather patterns and detailed measurements of the clouds and the surface of the ocean.  Check out this amazing video to learn more:



The GOES-R is still being completed at the Lockheed Martin cleanroom in Denver.  We’ll keep you posted on the progress of this satellite.
