There are lots of rumors and talk about when the first mission to Mars will happen.  NASA is continually facing budget cuts, and it is possible that private industry might take the lead on exploring the red planet.

Elon Musk, the famed genius and creator of the electric Tesla cars, has recently made a statement that he thinks a manned mission to Mars is possible in the next ten to twelve years.  Musk’s company SpaceX has already worked on solutions for a re-entry capsule, cargo ship, and now they are already working on even larger spacecraft that could take cargo and people to Mars.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, there are a lot of people willing to take a one- way trip to Mars, and the possibility of making a manned colony there within the next ten or twelve years seems like a very real possibility.  Musk looks at having a colony there as a way to preserve our species in the event something catastrophic happens on Earth.
